Plein Air or “in the open air” is a French phrase to describe a style of painting created in the moment from nature. Paintings are executed outdoors as opposed to in a studio. Each year in June, the Friends of the Riverfront sponsors a week-long Plein Air event with cash prizes. The event encourages artists to set up canvases along Beloit’s Riverfront to capture scenes of Beloit.

Rumor has it that Beloit was home to the original Indiana Jones: the world adventurer and explorer Roy Chapman Andrews. Each year the Roy Chapman Andrews Society partners with Beloit College to recognize contemporary explorers. Special award ceremony is open to the public.
